The use of generative AI (GenAI) is no longer limited to productivity and work automation. In Indonesia, AI technology is also beginning to be directed towards building more personalized social interactions, for example, for the elderly in nursing homes.
The Little Penguin student organization from the British School Jakarta, along with Redpumpkin.AI, launched the Good Karma app. This AI-based app is designed to manage volunteer visits to nursing homes and foster more meaningful interactions between volunteers and seniors.
Through this platform, volunteers can register for visits, select nursing homes, and earn appreciation points. Meanwhile, nursing home managers can monitor volunteer activities in real time within a single, integrated system.
AI Companion, Bridging the Generational Gap
One of the app's key features is the AI Companion for Volunteers. This feature is designed to help young volunteers bridge the intergenerational communication gap that often arises when interacting with older adults.
By leveraging GenAI, the system can provide personalized conversation topic recommendations and activity ideas based on the profiles and interests of nursing home residents.
This approach is said to be aimed at helping to create a warmer and more natural atmosphere of interaction.
"The development of Good Karma is unique because Redpumpkin.AI brings GenAI capabilities to humanize interactions, not replace them," the company wrote in its official statement.
Human-Centered AI Approach Poised for Education Sector
This collaboration is described as part of a long-term commitment that began in the senior care sector. Going forward, a similar approach is planned to be implemented in the education sector.
Little Penguin and Redpumpkin.AI said the same AI model is being developed to help teachers and school communities understand students' needs more personally.
In the same release, orthopedic specialist Dr. Henry Suhendra said social interaction is related to mobility and physical activity in the elderly.
"Seniors' health depends on mobility. The principle is simple: sit rather than sleep, stand rather than sit, walk rather than stand, and be active rather than just walking. The presence of volunteers through Good Karma provides mental stimulation to motivate seniors to keep moving," said Dr. Henry.
Little Penguin Highlights More Inclusive AI
Meanwhile, the British School Jakarta believes that the development of this application is also part of learning based on solving real problems in society.
Little Penguin founder Sean William said the development of Good Karma was aimed at ensuring technology could be used more inclusively.
"We designed Good Karma as a bridge. We want seniors to feel heard again. After this, our focus will be on bringing the AI solution we've created in collaboration with Redpumpkin.AI to the world of education to empower teachers and fellow students," said Sean.
For your information, the Good Karma application is currently available on the Google Play Store and App Store.
